Dietz, William C. Halo: The Flood. New York: The Random House Publishing Group, 2003

We left off with the Master Chief narrowly escaping the fortress world Reach, on the ship “The Pillar of Autumn” and crash landing onto a mysterious world. This is where Halo: The Flood begins, as well as the video game Halo: Combat Evolved begins. This mysterious world ties in with the title Halo, as it has a mysterious ring around the planet, which if a person were to read the books or play the games, it will bring the whole understanding of the Halo ring into perspective and its importance. Dietz continues on where Nylund left off in Halo: The Fall of Reach in successfully leading us through a more in depth look into the game Halo: Combat Evolved. In Halo: The Flood we are introduced to a new enemy besides the Covenant, this new enemy is come to known as the flood, which is a parasitic life form that feeds off of flesh, and is where the book got its title. Deitz leads us through an epic adventure where the Master Chief is saving, and raising the morale of the survivors of the Pillar of Autumn, as they fight to survive and escape the deadly fate of the flood and the ring world Halo. This is also the Master Chief’s first major battle without his other fellow Spartan soldiers support, which he slowly adapts to with the help of a new AI (artificial intelligence) named Cortana. And also at the time we find out that to their knowledge there is only one other Spartan alive in a cryo freeze aboard the Pillar of Autumn. Along with previous events and accomplishments, this book helps us understand how and why the Master Chief is looked at as an icon for hope and survival throughout the early stages of the war which takes place on the ring world known as Halo.

Nylund, Eric. Halo: The Fall of Reach. New York: The Ballantine Publishing Group, 2001, p. 30, 57, 58, 59, 115, 116, 241, 251, 252, 270

Most people only know the Master Chief as the main character of the successful video game series Halo, on Microsoft’s XBOX and XBOX 360. Until Halo: The Fall of Reach was written, the background of the Master Chief and his past were unknown. With the approval of Bungie ( the creators of Halo), and the Microsoft Corporation, Nylund was given the permission and resources possible to create Halo: The Fall of Reach. It is the first book of a series that goes more into depth of the events that occur before, during and after the Halo Video Games. Halo: The Fall of Reach brings us back to the beginning of the Master Chiefs childhood and early life before the events of the first video game Halo: Combat Evolved. Nylund first introduces the Master Chief at the age of six, which is when he is known as John, which is his birth name. He then leads us to an interesting conflict, one where “John, and the other 74 children” were selected and then “conscripted” (or abducted) by the UNSC (United Nations Space Command) to begin special training as part of the Spartan-II program. Throughout Halo: The Fall of Reach, Nylund leads us through the many challenges that the Master Chief has to overcome from his early training and fighting, to the fight for survival; all of which he succeeds. This is a small dose of how Nylund brings the Master Chief’s early life into perspective, and it leads us through his training into what formed him into what his is known as today, which is the Legendary “super soldier” who helped keep humanity from ultimate extinction . Without Halo: The Fall of Reach, the secrets of the Master Chiefs mysterious past would have never been known.

Nylund, Eric Halo: First Strike. New York: The Random House Publishing Group, 2003

Halo: First Strike is the third book in this series, and like the first book Halo: The Fall of Reach, it does not follow in depth with one of the four video games, but rather focuses on the events of Reach more in depth, and also the events that take place between the games Halo: Combat Evolved, and Halo 2. Nylund returns to the book series and split Halo: First Strike into six sections, which the Master Chief is directly involved with besides the first section. At the end of the fist section, the Master Chief is reunited with a few other Spartan Survivors from Reach that were unknown previously. With the Spartans morale high, Nylund now introduces us to a new strategy which intertwines with the title First Strike. This strategy is formulating a plan with the surviving Spartans, find the home world, assault, and consult the covenant leaders to try to bring a truce to end the war. With the Master Chief once again leading the charge, the Spartans are a force to be reckoned with. With him there, each Spartan is fighting harder, now knowing that their fellow Spartan and leader is back in battle with them. This book best displays the Master Chiefs leadership skills as his Spartans numbers are dwindled down, they are at near impossible odds, and they are in enemy territory. These are characteristics that they were trained for, but never have they faced this much of a challenge as a group. This displays how significant the Master Chief and other Spartans are to the outcome of the war, as we can say without them, there would not be much hope for humanity. During the last engagement, the Master Chief is once again separated from the other Spartans and finds his way back to Earth, which is the beginning of the video game Halo 2.
